The Markarian family establishes Carpeteria on Main Street in El Cajon, California.
Mel Markarian makes an entrepreneurial leap from healthcare to flooring, to join his brother and father, driven by a vision to serve San Diego's growing suburban communities.

"We had a great experience at Carpeteria. We worked with Tony to select the carpet and he was great. He walked through the different considerations and pros and cons of the products. He also had good design advice - we have custom cabinetry in our kitchen and we discussed that an herringbone patterned floor may call attention away from those cabinets. And his patience! We had him take out SO MANY samples to consider and then let us take some home to try out. Then the installation crew came- both the carpet and tile crews were amazing. Special shout out to Ulysses (tile installer) for his careful and thoughtful craftsmanship. No doubt we’ll use them next time!
